Join us for an important discussion about the revitalization of Anacostia and the potential for gentrification, featuring the voices of local Anacostia creatives and residents Mēlani N. Douglass, John Johnson, and Jason “JaySun” Anderson. This engaging conversation will highlight the experiences of those who live in the neighborhood and the impact these changes may have on their community. Your participation matters as we explore the balance between development and preserving local culture.

Jason “JaySun” Anderson is a multi-dimensional artist and Anacostia resident. Join us for an on-the-ground conversation about neighborhood gentrification with the people who live there.

Doors open at 6:30pm.

About the Taxilandia Salon series:

It’s almost here! The long awaited Taxilandia will arrive with three days of open dialogue with our artists working with the Taxilandia creators, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and YOU the participants as we disassemble and reassemble gentrification in all its forms in Anacostia.

Asking the question: What does it mean to be a local, an immigrant, or a resident?

Brooklyn-based artist Modesto Flako Jimenez has been bringing his acclaimed show, Taxilandia, (Taxilandia.com) to cities across America. In our city, Flako will design and host a series of hybrid salons with local artists Melani Douglass, John Johnson, and JaySun (Jason Anderson) whose work intersects with gentrification. In-person and streamed live, these salons are open to all and explore our notion of what it means to be a local, an immigrant or a resident of a place. Also partnering with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the salons will challenge us to answer “What is my personal roadmap of home?” and offer creative strategies for confronting gentrification.

Flako will host three participatory Taxilandia salons in three different DC locations, joined by a different artist from the local community at each. There is a small cost to join a salon and it requires a brief amount of pre-work documenting your neighborhood. Salons take place February 28, March 1 and March 2. Watch your email for the details and the ticket link!

Tickets on sale February 7.
